Instructors at the College of Prayer

Dr. Alvin VanderGriend is currently the National Facilitator of Lighthouse Ministries for Mission America. Mission America is a coalition of 80-plus denominations and 350-plus parachurch agencies that have as a goal praying for and sharing the gospel with every person in America. Alvin's vision is for a Lighthouse of Prayer on every street and an intercessor for every person.

Alvin was born and reared in the countryside near Lynden, Washington in the Pacific Northwest. He graduated from Calvin College in 1958 and from Calvin Seminary in 1961. He later attended Fuller Theological Seminary where he earned his Doctor ofMinistry degree in 1982. He is married to Carolyn De Vries of Ripon, California. The Lord has blessed them with four children.

Alvin began his ministry as a pastor serving three different Christian Reformed churches from 1963 to 1982. He then stepped into an executive role with the Christian Reformed church and served as Minister of Evangelism Resources for fourteen years. He is the principle architect of his denomination's effective Bible study evangelism program called Coffee Break, wrote Discover Your Gifts, developed a men's Bible study program called Men's Life and developed a small groups strategy. In 1996 Alvin became director of HOPE Ministries (Houses of Prayer Everywhere) where he developed the Lighthouse strategy, created Lighthouse resources, and provided prayer-evangelism training. He also taught a prayer course at Calvin Theological Seminary.

Dr. VanderGriend has written several prayer evangelism books including Houses of Prayer Everywhere, Make Your Home a Light-House, How Do I Pray for My Neighbors, How to talk to God and has co-authored the popular Praying Church Sourcebook. He also co-founded and chaired of the Denominational Prayer Leader's Network in the U.S. and now serves as a member of America's National Prayer Committee.
